Advertisement for Virginia Slims in good old ’69. But seriously Philip Morris where do you get everything from; ‘you’ve come a long way baby, you’ve got your own cigarettes now baby’?! Well…uhm…hurray? Don’t know if the worst part is the men who came up with this patronising bullocks or the women who fell for it. Admittedly, I’m a sucker for clever advertisement. Actually, it doesn’t even have to be clever, I’ll buy anything if you smile and make it sound like it’s good for me or a limited offer or selling out really fast so I should hurry before it’s too late. Or if you’re not a very good sales person I will probably buy something out of pity for you or to get away or to make you feel like you haven’t wasted your time (or rather to make me feel I haven’t wasted your time) talking to me even if I didn’t ask for your help in the first place. I do smoke Virginia Slims because they’re cheap and, as they point out in the advertisement, it’s the beautiful cigarette and also no man would ever smoke them. Wow…reading my first couple of sentences and the last one…I really managed to make an example of myself. See kids, don’t smoke. It ain’t good for ya.

There is outrage in the online literary community right now over Amazon excluding rankings (i.e. books will not show on top seller lists etc.) on books containing “adult material”. Fair choice one might think, until you hear that Playboy: The Complete Centerfolds still has its ranking but not: Jeanette Winterson’s Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit, Annie Proulx’s Brokeback Mountain and Stephen Fry’s Moab is my Washpot. Most books with any LGBT, romance or erotica content appears to have been affected. Unless Amazon does a more general censorship on all books I don’t really see how they can get away with this for very long.

“Scholars Discover 23 Blank Pages That May As Well Be Lost Samuel Beckett Play”

This article from The Onion – Americas Finest Newresource is quite old but it always makes me laugh out load. That Beckett frustrates me a little bit could be the understatement of the year, and I could probably make more sense out of 23 blank pages than I can of Waiting for Godot. Hopefully, seeing it staged will ease my confusion a little bit so I have booked tickets to go and see the play in April. Thinking about it, it is quite probable that it has the opposite effect. But never mind, to be honest, the main reason I wanted to go was to see Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen…can’t wait!

This is brilliant….and addictive.

TED – Technology, Education and Design. Loads of speeches from the conferences they hold every year are available online. They are brief and concise but so intelligent, engaging and inspiring. And quite funny.

The newest fashion magazine Love hits news racks today BUT WHERE? Yeah I know, the Greek corner shop doesn’t really count as looking for it. Lazy.

“Love is a twice-yearly compendium of inspiration – for designers, for artists, for anyone looking for visual ideas; for anyone who loves fashion and design so much that they want to climb inside the heads of their heroes. Love doesn’t follow fashion: it sets fashion’s agenda.”

And they have a blog.
